For many years I have worked in catering establishments all over London, the kitchens of which are truelly multi - cultural and numerous languages were spoken and never stopped amongst staff speaking with each other. However, all had to be conversant with 'English' in the kitchen and it was an H&S issue full stop apart from being practical. I am not going to be too oppinionated about the Carreg Mon affair as obviously I do not know the situation in full and any way this is a matter for the Hotel and staff plus their Union representation.

However, I have been around North Wales a number of times in recent years and often come up against Restaruant and bar staff from Eastern Europe in particular who do speak 'English' but not 'Cymraeg'. Language activists do not appear to be bothered too much about that, too racist perhaps? However, there is a problem there as such such staff are often just 'Seeing The World' and passing through and thus just how can they be expected to learn the language of a country they stay in for a short while only?
