FAREWELL WALES - WELCOME CYMRU from AluninDyfed.
.
.
For emigrants to the New World and aficionados of the game of rugby the word "Wales" must make the heart beat faster, but the word is derived from the Saxon word for foreigner *. The native Britons) of Celtic and indigenous stock, left to defend the island of Britain following the departure of the Romans, were depicted by Angle and Saxon invaders as foreigners ('wealas') in their own land. Conversely, the English invaders were named 'saeson' by the Britons (the word also meaning 'foreigner' or non-Welsh speaker). The point is that "Wales"' and "Welsh" are names given to the native peoples of Britain by the invaders and the name "Cornwall" refers to the Welsh of the peninsular to which they were confined. Thus, the people of Wales are foreigners in their own land, much as the Kurds are, in a land which they call home but which is subject to an invasive force which has imposed its culture on the inhabitants. Years of indoctrination and use have inured the people to the acceptance of a foreign name as their own, so much so that the heart beats quicker when this name is invoked, on the rugby field or the Eisteddfod maes. However, it so happens that the so-called "Welsh" have a proud name of their own and for their land, or the remaining land which was not usurped by the settlers from Germany. These lands comprise Cornwall, Wales and Cumbria. Strathclyde and Galloway are now a part of Scotland but were also home to the Britons. The name which describes the British tribes under Roman rule is the Cymry and there land is Cymru. The Cymry settled in the lands now geographically described as Wales, Cornwall, Cumbria and Strathclyde. The remaining lands of Britain were overrun by the Norse invaders in Northumberland (originally home to the North Cymry) extending to Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, Norfolk (North folk) and Suffolk (South folk), while the plains of Mercia (the Midlands) were occupied by the Angles and southern Britain by the Saxons. (Sussex,Wessex, Essex). Devon was a Celtic homeland and the Brythonic language was spoken there during the "Dark Ages" following the invasions. Many Devon place names remain as evidence (tor, combe, pol, etc.).Presumably, following the declaration of independence, one of the first acts of the Welsh (Cymric) government will be to announce that the nation of Wales will forever after be named "Cymru". After so many years of use and custom it will seem strange to many inhabitants of Cymru to refer to their homeland by a different name but at least the name will be authentic as well as official. We are at the start of a new year, 2010, so it would seem appropriate for all of us, who care for the nation of which we are a part, to use the correct nomenclature from now on, and get accustomed to calling the nation and its people by the correct name. From henceforth, as far as "Independence Cymru" is concerned we will refer to "Wales" as Cymru, the people of "Wales" as the Cymry, and the "Welsh" language as Cymraeg.

* My only addition is to note that in the past some thought it also meant 'Slave' but more likly meant 'Roman Like'. My only comment regards above is that, I am reminded that Cymuned made much about Eryri being used rather than use of Snowdon, in that case a more pro - active campaign would have been a good thing.

.

A must have book for all Adfywiadwr Activists, I had also asked Santa for The 50th Law but did not get that under my Xmas Tree so will have to go out and buy it myself. Suggest anyone who seriously wants to be a radical protester and not just a passive petitioner, then these two books are a must for starters ok!

INTRODUCTION: Trech Gwlad Nag Arglwydd - In the beginning!
,
.
.
However, to return to where I began this post, my concerns and campaigning will not just be regards Wales but will be of more wider and broader concern regards international issues of injustice, oppression and exploitation of peoples, their communities and land and natural resources therein. I have been further motivated to put up this blog by the amount of material that comes my way concerning various campaigns and it seems to me this is the best way I can support such causes by sharing the material information with a wider public. I will of course appreciate your interest in this blog and, maybe occasionally some active support. Yes info, news and even articles will be welcome.
.So what's this blog about? we
ll being of the age when I do not need a lot of sleep, I find myself listening to the BBC World Service on which there is an huge amount of reporting on the social injustices and economic evils going on in the world. This is making me much more concerned about what is going on amongst the 'Wretched of the Earth', I have always had a social conscience but to be honest my 45 years in Welsh politics has mostly been concerned with Welsh Nationalist Issues, then of a radical political theme rather than of the Cultural kind, the Investiture of 1969 made of me a committed anti - monarchist. However, In the ''Sixties'' (yes I am that old) my concerns in main were about such as Tryweryn and Clywedog and the exploitation of Welsh Water, in recent times I have become concerned about the exploitation of Welsh Land by foreign power companies in the 'Windmilling of Wales'' in interests more to do with their profits than saving the environment. This has taken me beyond the matter of windmills but to be more concerned with the wider issue of who actually owns Wales, certainly Welsh farmers are in possession of much land but how much is still owned by Anglo - Norman Lords? Then of course there is issue of how much of our land is owned by English Cities, the British Army and Forestry Commission all with an history of dispossessing our people of their land.

Thus, last year I raised up the Red Pitchfork banner universal to all people involved in struggles fo
r Land and Liberty as a means of awakening people to such matters, not least the threat of Cheque Book Conquest and various forms of Neo - Colonialism by stealth through tourism and rural property developments etc. At moment I am in the main researching such land issue matters in our history from time of medieval colonisation to 16th Century and later land enclosures that brought about the first popular protests of Welsh peasants and small holders, as in the Forest of Snowdon affair. Before that the medieval revolts of 1294, 1315-16 and 1345 very much had the makings of popular rebellions, not least the Owain Glyndwr War of National Liberation was very much a popular peasant anti - colonial movement. But the moment in time we can clearly see the beginnings of peoples popular protest, is in the struggle of the commoners of commote Caio who in resisting enclosures cried out 'Trech Gwlad Nag Arglwydd', a call that has echoed down the ages. For further information on popular struggles as example of Rhyfel y Sais Bach 1826 do read BEFORE REBECCA by D.V.Jones.
